Six soil test methods were evaluated for predicting response of French bean to phosphorus application on twenty surface soils (0–15 cm) of Thoubal district, Manipur. The suitability of these extractants was in the descending order: Bray-P1 > Morgan-P > Mehlich-P1 > Bray-P2 > Olsen-P > Truog-P. Bray-P1 extractable phosphorus showed the highest and positive correlations with dry matter yield (control), phosphorus content (control), phosphorus uptake (control), Bray’s per cent yield and Bray’s per cent uptake. Therefore, Bray-P1 extractant may be used as an index of available phosphorus for French bean cv. Contender grown in acid soils of Thoubal district, Manipur, the critical level being 21.2 kg P2O5 ha-1. The critical limit of phosphorus content in French bean at 40 days old was 0.29 per cent.
