Abstract:

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the most important legume crops worldwide. However, its production in Togo faces several constraints. This study aimed to document production practices and identify the major constraints affecting groundnut production in Togo. A survey was conducted among 907 producers in 19 prefectures across the five administrative regions of Togo. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with R software. Results showed that 35.61% of producers belonged to cooperatives. Chi-square tests and correspondence analysis revealed significant regional differences in seed origin and sowing dates (p< 0.001). The main constraints reported by producers were diseases (95.26%), financing (86.33%), market access (79.05%), seed availability (72.66%), rainfall variability (70.45%), and insect pests (52.81%). Linear mixed-effects regression analysis indicated that cooperative membership, the use of formal seed sources, and crop protection practices were positively associated with groundnut yield. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening producer organizations, improving access to quality seeds and financial resources, and promoting effective crop protection practices. The documented production practices and constraints provide a valuable basis for designing strategies to improve groundnut productivity and sustainability in Togo.
