Abstract:

Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential trace element at low concentrations but may become an environmental concern when present in contaminated water. This study evaluated rhizosphere bacteria and their potential use in molybdenum bioremediation of industrial groundwater collected from the Ambattur area, Chennai. Water samples were examined for preliminary physicochemical characteristics and qualitative heavy-metal reactions. Rhizosphere soil was serially diluted and three isolates (C1, C2 and C3) were screened in groundwater-contaminated medium. Isolate C2 was selected for further characterization because it showed the highest recorded growth response among the three isolates. C2 was Gram-positive, cocci-shaped and non-motile, and was positive for indole, methyl red, Voges–Proskauer, citrate, catalase and oxidase tests. Growth was evaluated over pH 4–9, 25–50 °C and 1–6% inoculum. C2 showed its highest recorded absorbance at pH 7 (0.50), 40 °C (0.50), and 2–4% inoculum (0.52). A microbial inoculant prepared from the selected culture also improved seed germination: at 100 µL/g, germination reached 95% in bhendi and 98% in sunflower compared with 79% and 85% in controls. The findings support further investigation of rhizosphere bacteria as low-cost candidates for molybdenum-affected water, although quantitative residual-molybdenum measurements and molecular identification are required for confirmation.
