Abstract:

The field experiment entitled “Effect of mulching on growth and productivity of Bt cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)” was conducted at Research Farm of University College of Agriculture, Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda to study the effect of different levels of mulching on growth and yield of Bt cotton during kharif season in 2018. The trial was laid out in randomized complete block design and replicated thrice. Application of wheat straw as mulching significantly reduced the weed biomass in the crop. The treatment consists of control, hand hoeing, wheat straw as mulching @ 5, 10 and 15 t/ha. Application of wheat straw as mulching significantly increased growth parameters viz., plant height, dry matter accumulation, number of branches plant-1 and leaf area index and yield attributes viz., number of bolls plant-1, boll weight, seed cotton yield, and stalk yield. With application of mulching @ 5, 10 and 15 t/ha recorded 19.2, 38.4 and 34.4% more seed cotton yield than control.

Keywords: Boll weight, Bt cotton, Hand hoeing, Mulching, Seed cotton yield
