Different Types of Soil Acidity as Influenced by Nitrogen Application and Soil Types in Dhamtari Block of Chhattisgarh, India

Abstract:

Soil acidification is caused by a number of factors including acidic precipitation and the deposition from the atmosphere of acidifying gases or particles, such as sulphur dioxide, ammonia and nitric acid. The most important causes of soil acidification on agricultural land, however, are the application of ammonium‐based fertilizers and urea, elemental S fertilizer and the growth of legumes. Soil samples were collected over a period of 2017-2018 from the entire block, to study physico-chemical parameters of three seasons. A comparative study has been carried out in order to study the extent of pollution caused due to application of chemical fertilizers to soil and water systems. Relative order for all forms of acidity was Inceptisol >Alfisols >Vertisol. On average contribution of soil acidity due to TPA in Inceptisol, Alfisol and Vertisol was found maximum 35.5 %, 35.6 % and 32.3 % at 0-30 cm soil depth, 36.0 %, 34.3 % and 33.0 % at 30-60 cm soil depth and 35.5 %, 34.6 % and 33.0 % at 60 - 90 cm soil depth, respectively, while, the minimum contribution in soil acidity was due to exchangeable acidity i.e. 9.2, 8.5 and 9.2 % at 0-30 cm soil depth, 7.5 %, 6.5 % and 7.5 % at 30-60 cm depth and 5.6, 4.8 and 5.5% at 60 - 90 cm soil depth, respectively. The different forms of soil acidity in Dhamtri block of Chhattisgarh in the following order TPA>PDA> Al3+>TA>EA>E- Al3+> exchangeable acidity.
