Abstract:

Trials were conducted under protected conditions for two consecutive years to ascertain the role of different growing media on quality characteristics of strawberry cv. Chandler fruits. The investigations revealed that the plants grown in growing substrate composed of perlite + FYM (1:1) had the maximum influence on flower, fruit and yield characteristics in comparison to all other soilless substrates used under study. This substrate was also found to have a positive influence on physico-chemical characteristics like total soluble solids, total sugars and reducing sugars. The present investigations have also revealed that the use of perlite as a substrate was highly effective in improving the fruit and yield characteristics even when it was used alone and results in better yield and fruit quality of strawberry cv. Chandler.
