Several unicellular microorganisms use small signalling molecules to find out their local concentration. The processes involved in the production and recognition of these signals are generally known as quorum sensing (QS). Unicellular microorganisms to manage their activities use this kind of cell-to-cell communication, which allows them to work as multi-cellular systems. Newly, several groups have confirmed artificial intra species and inter-species communication through synthetic circuits, which incorporate components of bacterial QS systems.
