Heavy metal pollution in freshwater environments is a major concern as it may lead on deterioration of habitats by depleding or eliminating sensitive and commercial species. Hence the present study was carried out in two aquatic systems (pond and river) located in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Results indicate that the heavy metal content in water as well as algae was found to be higher in the river system than the pond system, while the hierarchy of heavy metals in water (pond and river) was Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu the hierarchy of metal concentration in pond algae was Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu while in the river algae was Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu.
